Eco-Friendly Exploring the Lake District by EV
Spring is well and truly arriving in the Lake District, and if you're planning a trip to Windermere in 2026, there's never been a better time to make the journey in an electric vehicle. The roads winding through the national park are some of the most scenic in Britain, and doing it all without a drop of petrol feels genuinely satisfying. Whether you're arriving as a group of couples or bringing the whole family together for a multigenerational escape, the Lakes rewards slow, thoughtful travel, and EV driving fits that rhythm perfectly.
One of the practical questions we hear from guests is simple: "Where do we charge?" We've got you covered from the moment you arrive at Thornbeck Manor, with dedicated electric car charging facilities on site. That means you can plug in overnight, wake up to a full battery, and head out each morning ready to explore without a second thought.
Here's how to make the most of an eco-friendly Lakes itinerary, starting and ending right here at your home base in Windermere.
Start Your Day the Right Way
Before you head out, breakfast matters. The good news is that several of our favourite spots are within walking distance, so you won't even need the car first thing. Homeground Coffee + Kitchen is a brilliant choice for a proper morning coffee and something hearty before a day on the road. Toast is equally popular for breakfast and lunch, and the Windermere Jetty Museum Cafe has a lovely lakeside setting that makes the morning feel special before you've even left town.
Once you're fuelled up and your EV has had its overnight charge, you're ready to head out.
The Southern Lakes Loop
The southern Lake District is wonderfully accessible from Windermere, and this loop makes for a satisfying half-day or full-day drive with minimal effort. Head south towards Newby Bridge, following the eastern shore of Windermere along the A592. The views across the water are spectacular, particularly on a clear March morning when the light sits low and golden across the fells.
From Newby Bridge, loop westward through Grizedale Forest if you fancy a stop for fresh air and walking trails among the trees. Electric vehicles are particularly well-suited to this kind of stop-start touring because regenerative braking helps recover energy on the descents, which you'll find plenty of as you navigate the undulating roads between villages.
Circle back through Hawkshead, one of the most characterful villages in the national park, before returning to Windermere along the western side of the lake via the Claife Heights road. The whole loop is manageable in a single charge for most modern EVs, especially with your overnight top-up at Thornbeck Manor.
Heading North Towards Ambleside and Grasmere
For a slightly longer adventure, the A591 north from Windermere takes you through Ambleside and up into Grasmere, Wordsworth country, and one of the most visited villages in the entire national park. The drive itself is beautiful, and Grasmere offers everything from independent cafes to the famous Sarah Nelson's Gingerbread Shop (which has been operating from the same tiny stone building since 1854).
A key tip for EV drivers: there are public charging points available in Ambleside and at some car parks in Grasmere, so if you're planning a longer day out or have a shorter-range vehicle, it's worth checking apps like Zap-Map before you set off to identify the fastest chargers along your route.
The Kirkstone Pass Experience
If your group is feeling adventurous, the Kirkstone Pass is one of the highest road passes in the Lake District and offers some of the most dramatic scenery you'll find anywhere in England. The road climbs steeply from Ambleside up towards Brothers Water and Ullswater beyond.
A word of caution: steep ascents do use more battery than flat motorway driving, so this route is best saved for days when you've started with a full charge. Fortunately, staying at Thornbeck Manor with on-site EV charging means that's exactly what you'll have every single morning.
The descent into Patterdale and along the shores of Ullswater is genuinely breathtaking, and the journey back south gives you a chance to recover some of that energy through regenerative braking on the long downhill stretches.
Evening Back in Windermere and Bowness
One of the real pleasures of basing yourself in Windermere is that after a full day exploring, you can come back, plug the car in, and walk to dinner. The Drunken Duck Inn is widely regarded as one of the finest dining experiences in the Lakes if you're looking for something special. For something a little more relaxed, Hooked Windermere is excellent for fresh fish, and Porto Restaurant in Bowness offers a warm, welcoming atmosphere with consistently good food.
After dinner, it's a short walk back to the manor. The car charges quietly overnight, and you wake up ready to do it all again.
Practical EV Tips for Lake District Touring
Plan your range realistically. Most modern EVs will comfortably handle 150 to 200 miles per charge, which is more than enough for a full day in the Lakes. The key is knowing where your top-up points are along more ambitious routes.
Use off-peak charging where possible. Charging overnight at your accommodation (like the facilities we offer at Thornbeck Manor) is typically more cost-effective and leaves you with a full battery at the start of each day rather than hunting for a charger mid-afternoon.
Check road conditions in March. Some higher passes can still be affected by late winter weather in early spring. It's always worth a quick check on the Cumbria Roads website before heading up towards the higher fells.
Download Zap-Map. It's the most comprehensive EV charging network map for the UK and will show you live availability at public chargers across the national park.
The Lake District and electric vehicle travel are a natural match. Quieter roads, stunning scenery, and the kind of unhurried pace that rewards thoughtful planning all point in the same direction. And when you have a private charger waiting for you each evening at your own exclusive villa retreat, the logistics couldn't be simpler.
