Travelling through the South Lake District without a car might seem daunting, but it opens up a world where tranquility and breathtaking scenery take centre stage. Imagine stepping off the train and immediately immersing yourself in nature's splendour, all while leaving behind the stresses of driving and parking. This luxurious, car-free itinerary ensures you experience the charming landscapes and serene beauty of the Lake District, starting with the welcoming Thornbeck Manor.

Seamless Travel by Train

Start your adventure by taking the Avanti West Coast Mainline Service to ‘Oxenholme, The Lake District’ train station. From here, a short connection on the Northern Lakes Line brings you to Windermere, setting the stage for your scenic journey. This comfortable train ride provides a stress-free alternative to driving, allowing you to arrive relaxed and ready to explore.

Day 1: A Scenic Day in Windermere

Upon arrival, make your way to Thornbeck Manor, a short 10-minute walk from Lake Windermere. Singular in its charm, Thornbeck Manor offers not just a place to stay, but an experience. With stunning mountain views and a gentle brook by the house, it's a perfect retreat.

After dropping off your luggage, embark on a walk to Orrest Head. This accessible route offers impressive views across Windermere and the Lakeland fells, thanks to the Miles Without Stiles initiative. As you ascend, each step reveals more of the stunning scenery that makes the Lake District a beloved destination for nature enthusiasts.

Post-hike, return to Windermere and savour a leisurely lunch. Choices are plentiful: dine at The Café at Lakeland or head over to the Lamplighter Dining Rooms. Prefer something on-the-go? Booths supermarket, conveniently located next to the train station, offers a range of gourmet picnic options.

Ready for more adventure? Rent a bike from Total Adventure Bike Hire, just a few minutes from the train station. With a variety of bicycles available, including e-bikes, mountain bikes, and gravel bikes, you'll find the ideal ride. Let the helpful staff suggest routes that cater to different skill levels, ensuring an enjoyable ride for all.

After a day packed with exploration, return to Windermere for a restful night's sleep.

Day 2: Treetop Adventures and Tranquil Walks

Start your second day with a hearty breakfast at your accommodation, then catch the Stagecoach 555 bus to Brockhole, home to Zip World Windermere. This spectacular treetop adventure promises a day full of fun, with treks suited to varying levels of daring. Whether it's the full Treetop Trek ending in a thrilling 250m triple zip-line, or a more relaxed Mini Trek, there's something for everyone.

After your exhilarating morning, enjoy a relaxing lunch at Brockhole's on-site café, providing a perfect blend of scrumptious food and picturesque lake views.

With renewed energy, catch the 555 bus to Rydal. Here, a gentle walk around Rydal Water and Rydal Caves awaits. This serene environment offers a peaceful contrast to the morning’s activities, letting you reconnect with nature's quieter side.

As the day draws to a close, return to Windermere via the 555 bus.

After your break, head back to Oxenholme to catch your homeward train. This seamless blend of adventure and relaxation, set against the backdrop of Cumbria's breathtaking beauty, ensures that your car-free journey is both memorable and rejuvenating.
