Picnic Perfect: A Luxury Lunch for the Lake District Fells

Picnic Perfect: A Luxury Lunch for the Lake District Fells

There is something genuinely magical about eating outdoors in the Lake District. The kind of lunch that tastes better simply because you are sitting on a hillside, looking out over Windermere, with absolutely nowhere you need to be. No restaurant table to vacate, no bill arriving too soon. Just good food, good company, and that particular silence you only get in the fells.

If you are staying with us at Thornbeck Manor and planning a day out on the hills, packing a proper picnic is one of the best decisions you can make. Not a sad sandwich-in-a-bag situation. A genuinely luxurious spread that matches the setting and the occasion.

Here is how we would put one together.

Start With a Proper Bag (It Really Does Matter)

Before you think about food, think about how you are carrying it. A well-insulated cooler bag or a classic wicker hamper will keep everything at the right temperature and stop anything getting crushed on the climb. If you are heading up somewhere like Orrest Head or the lower slopes of Loughrigg Fell, you do not want to be wrestling with a carrier bag on a stile.

A backpack-style cooler is ideal for longer walks. A traditional hamper suits a gentler lakeside picnic perfectly.

Build Around Quality Ingredients

A luxury picnic is less about fuss and more about quality. A handful of genuinely good ingredients will always outperform a complicated spread of mediocre ones.

Cheese and charcuterie form the backbone of any serious outdoor lunch. The Lake District is superb cheese country, so pick up a wedge of something local before you head out. Pair it with good cured meats, some decent crackers, and a small pot of chutney or honeycomb.

Fresh bread travels beautifully. A sourdough loaf or a crusty baguette, torn rather than sliced, feels far more satisfying than pre-packaged alternatives.

Olives, cornichons, and sun-dried tomatoes add flavour without bulk. Small jars pack neatly and add real depth to the spread.

A simple salad in a sealed container, dressed just before eating, keeps things feeling fresh rather than tired. Think peppery rocket with shaved parmesan, or a herby lentil salad that holds up well even after an hour in a bag.

Something sweet to finish. Brownies, shortbread, or a couple of slices of a good fruit cake are all practical and genuinely satisfying. Avoid anything too delicate or cream-heavy unless you have excellent ice packs.

Think About Drinks Thoughtfully

A Thermos of good coffee or tea is non-negotiable if you are heading out on a cool spring morning. We are still in that part of the year where the air on the fells has a proper bite to it, even when the sun is out, and a hot drink mid-walk is a small luxury that makes a significant difference.

For something cold, a bottle of sparkling water is always welcome. If you are doing a gentle lakeside stroll rather than a proper climb, a chilled bottle of rosé or a can of something local from one of the area's craft breweries fits the mood nicely.

Avoid glass wherever the terrain gets tricky. Enamel cups and lightweight reusable bottles are practical without feeling like a compromise.

Do Not Forget the Details

This is where a luxury picnic actually separates itself from a basic one. Proper napkins (cloth ones if you can manage it), real cutlery rather than plastic, a small cutting board for cheese, and a blanket that is actually large enough for everyone to sit on comfortably.

A small beeswax wrap or reusable container for each person means no searching around for lids when the wind picks up. Little details like these are the difference between a picnic that feels considered and one that feels like an afterthought.

Where to Head With Your Hamper

From Thornbeck Manor, you are genuinely spoilt for choice. Orrest Head is a short walk from Windermere town and rewards you with panoramic views that feel completely out of proportion to the effort required. It is a brilliant spot for a lunch stop.

The shores of Windermere near Bowness offer a flatter, more relaxed option that suits families with younger children particularly well. You can spread out properly and enjoy the view at a gentler pace.

For something more ambitious, Loughrigg Fell offers outstanding views across multiple lakes and is accessible enough for a mixed-ability group. Pack accordingly because the walk back always seems longer than the walk out.

Stock Up Before You Go

Windermere and Bowness are both within easy walking distance of Thornbeck Manor, and there are some excellent local options for stocking your hamper. Lago Wine and Cheese in Windermere is an obvious first stop for cheese and accompaniments. The local delis and farm shops in the area stock genuinely good produce that you would struggle to find in a supermarket.

If you would rather have a proper meal out on your return, places like Hooked Windermere or the Drunken Duck Inn are well worth a booking. But there is something particularly satisfying about coming back from a day on the fells having fed yourself well out there.

Make the Most of Every Day Here

A luxury picnic is one of those simple pleasures that makes a Lake District stay feel genuinely complete. It gets you away from the car parks and the queues, into the landscape, and gives the whole group something to rally around.

We want every day you spend here to feel as good as the last. Whether that is a morning coffee on the balcony watching the light come up over the mountains, or a full day out on the fells with a hamper worth every ounce of the effort carrying it, we want Thornbeck Manor to be the base that makes all of it possible.

If you are ready to plan your Lake District escape, you can check our availability and book your stay at Thornbeck Manor directly. We would love to have you.
