The Lake District is world-famous for its dramatic fells and shimmering waters. It is the perfect place to press pause on the rush of daily life. While hiking and boating are the usual ways to soak up the scenery, there is a quieter, more profound experience waiting for you at Whasdyke Farm.
Imagine standing in a lush paddock, surrounded by the rolling Cumbrian landscape. Now, imagine closing your eyes and finding a deep sense of peace alongside a creature that weighs nearly a tonne. This is the unique magic of meditation with heavy horses.
Two Bodies, One Heartbeat
It sounds incredible, but horses possess an uncanny ability to connect with us physically and emotionally. They have exceptional hearing and can actually detect a human heartbeat from four feet away. In the wild, horses synchronise their heartbeats with the rest of the herd to sense danger. If one heart races, they all know to be on high alert.
This survival instinct translates beautifully into therapy. When we interact with these animals, they sync with our rhythm. If we are stressed, they know. But when we slow our breathing and calm our minds during meditation, we invite the horses into that relaxed space with us. It creates a feedback loop of safety and support.
This concept, often described as 'Two Bodies - One Heart Beat', explains why these sessions are so effective. You aren't just meditating near a horse; you are meditating with them.
Meet the Team
The sessions are led by certified therapist Mayela Redondo and BHSAI qualified teacher Debbie Graham. They are the experts who facilitate this connection, but the real stars of the show are the four Clydesdales: Otto, Paddy, Sam, and Ferdy.
These heavy horses are the definition of gentle giants. During a session, Debbie and Mayela introduce you to the herd before the guided meditation begins. It is fascinating to watch the horses react as the group settles into stillness.
Often, the horses start by having a good scratch, getting comfortable in their surroundings. As the meditation deepens, their energy noticeably drops. They might lower their heads, their eyelids getting heavy, and some even stumble slightly as they drift into a near-sleep state right alongside you. It is a powerful visual reminder of how calm the energy has become.
A Perfect Afternoon in the Lakes
A typical session lasts about an hour. After the welcome and the 30-40 minute guided meditation, there is a lovely way to say thank you to your equine partners. You are provided with apples to feed the horses, which is always a highlight.
To round off the experience, the group gathers for hot drinks and homemade cake or biscuits. It is a wonderful opportunity to chat about the experience and ground yourself before heading back to the real world.
For those of us who value a true 'home from home' experience, this kind of personal, warm hospitality resonates deeply. Just as we strive to offer a sanctuary of comfort and luxury at Thornbeck Manor, the team at Whasdyke Farm creates a safe haven where you can truly relax. Returning to our villa after such a grounding afternoon, perhaps to curl up on the sofa or enjoy a quiet evening in the garden, makes for an unforgettable day in Windermere.
Essential Information for Your Visit
Because this takes place on a working farm, there are a few practical things to keep in mind to ensure everyone stays safe and happy.
Footwear: Stout shoes are a must. Open-toe sandals are not suitable for being around heavy horses.
Clothing: Wear comfortable clothes that you don't mind wearing in a stable environment.
Age Limit: Due to insurance restrictions, these sessions are strictly for clients aged 16 and older.
Pets: As much as we love dogs, please leave your four-legged friends at your accommodation as they are not permitted on the farm.
Payment: Sessions are paid by cash only on the day.
If you have specific requirements, such as wheelchair access or if you are bringing a carer, the team is incredibly accommodating. Just let them know when you book so they can ensure the experience is positive for you.
Booking Your Session
Whether you are looking for a shared group experience or something more private, there are options available.
Guided Group Meditation: Held on Saturdays during summer (and Wednesdays in spring/autumn) at 2pm. These groups are small, capped at 5 people.
Private Sessions: Available for individuals or groups of up to 5 people on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays by arrangement.
This is a rare opportunity to connect with nature in a way few people ever experience. If you are ready to slow your heart rate and meet Otto, Paddy, Sam, and Ferdy, we highly recommend you book a guided group meditation during your next visit to the Lakes.
