Crafting Beauty in Glass, One Pane at a Time
If you have ever admired the intricate beauty of stained glass and wondered how such pieces are made, here's your chance to step into the artisan’s shoes. The One-Day Intro to Stained Glass Workshop at the Quaker Tapestry Museum in Kendal offers an inspiring and hands-on opportunity to create your own stained glass masterpiece.
This workshop isn’t just another crafting session—it’s a celebration of history, artistry, and self-expression. And what's more, it’s set within the charming surroundings of Kendal, perfectly complementing a leisurely stay in the idyllic Lake District.
A Hands-On Journey Through Stained Glass
Scheduled for 6th June 2025, this immersive workshop runs from 10 am to 5 pm, providing seven hours of guided instruction. Under the expert guidance of your tutor, Elizabeth Hippisley-Cox, attendees will learn the essential skills of traditional stained glass making.
Whether you opt for one of Elizabeth’s prepared templates or bring your own simple design idea, you’ll create a stunning panel that can consist entirely of coloured glass or incorporate mirrored elements. Starting with choosing and cutting your glass, you'll master the art of assembling these elements with lead. Finally, soldering brings it all together, and you'll leave with a finished piece to cherish.
Key Details for the Workshop:
Cost: £90 per person (plus a £30 materials fee payable in cash on the day).
Location: The Quaker Tapestry Museum, Friends Meeting House, Stramongate, Kendal, LA9 4BH.
Suitable for those with good hand mobility and strength; see note below for health considerations.
As a bonus, participants of the workshop receive complimentary entry to the Quaker Tapestry Museum on the day, allowing you to explore more about this fascinating venue.
Meet Your Tutor: Elizabeth Hippisley-Cox
Elizabeth ("Lizzy") Hippisley-Cox is no ordinary tutor. As the founder of Eden Stained Glass in the Eden Valley, she brings years of experience in repairing and conserving precious stained glass artworks. Her credentials are impressive: a degree in Medieval history, an apprenticeship at York Minster’s prestigious Glaziers’ Trust, and a Craft Fellowship with the William Morris Society.
Lizzy’s passion doesn’t stop at restoration—she’s deeply inspired by the stained glass traditions of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Her hands-on teaching style encourages students to create artwork that is both personal and a heartfelt nod to the time-honoured traditions of this beautiful craft.
When you join this workshop, you're not only learning from a master craftswoman but also participating in the keeping alive of a historic practice—now that's an enriching experience.
The Practical Side of Creativity
Making stained glass is an art that requires concentration, passion, and a touch of physical effort. As noted, participants will need good mobility and strength in their hands, as well as the ability to stand for periods of the workshop.
Additionally, the use of lead and other materials with potential health risks makes safety paramount. Comprehensive health and safety guidelines will be provided, along with all necessary protective equipment. However, if you are pregnant or have specific concerns, contacting the tutor ahead of the workshop is encouraged.
Taking part in this course can be a refreshingly active and fulfilling way to spend the day, whether you're visiting Kendal or call it home.
A Full Day of Creativity and Relaxation
One of the highlights of this immersive workshop is that all participants are fueled with comfort and convenience. Hot drinks and biscuits are available throughout the event, ensuring that creativity flows seamlessly. For a more substantial break, lunch is available for purchase at the museum’s charming on-site café—a perfect way to recharge before continuing your artistic endeavors.
This workshop makes for an excellent addition to a holiday itinerary, especially for those visiting Kendal or the Lake District. Combining the tactile satisfaction of working with glass, the chance to meet like-minded individuals, and the serene museum surroundings, this experience perfectly balances creativity and relaxation.
