Winter Wandering: The Best Windermere Walks

There is a distinct magic that settles over the Lake District as November fades into December. The bracken turns a deep russet, the air holds a crisp promise of frost, and the crowds of summer have thinned to leave a peaceful serenity behind. For us, this is the perfect time to lace up the boots and head out.

We believe that a great winter walk is defined not just by the route you take, but by where you end up. The joy of a cold nose and rosy cheeks is best experienced knowing there is a sanctuary of warmth waiting for you at the finish line. If you are planning a visit to Windermere, here are a few of our favourite routes that pair perfectly with a cosy evening back at our place.

The Orrest Head Outlook

For those of you who want the views without an entire day of strenuous climbing, Orrest Head is ideal. It is a classic for a reason. You can start this walk right from the town centre, just a short distance from our location on Thornbarrow Road. The path winds up through mixed woodland that looks stunning in the winter light.

When you reach the top, the panorama of Lake Windermere and the fells beyond is breathtaking. It is the perfect spot for a group photo if you are staying with us as a multi-generational family. On your way back down, you might stop for a warming coffee at Homeground Coffee + Kitchen or perhaps a hearty lunch at The Easy Breeze. Being centrally located means you never have to venture far to find excellent local hospitality.

The Bowness Promenade Loop

Sometimes you just want to be near the water. A stroll along the Bowness promenade offers a gentler pace. This is particularly lovely if you are visiting with younger children or grandparents who prefer level ground. You can watch the steamers gliding across the grey-blue water and feed the ducks before heading into town.

We love recommending a stop at Hooked for seafood lovers, or Porto Restaurant if you fancy something a bit more refined. For those who want a vibrant atmosphere, Baha Bowness is always a good choice. The beauty of staying at Thornbeck Manor is that Windermere and Bowness are practically on your doorstep, giving you access to these incredible dining options within walking distance.

A Retreat Worth Returning To

While the walks and the food are wonderful, the best part of a winter break is the feeling of coming home. We designed our villa specifically to capture that "home from home" feeling, but with the polish of five-star luxury. After a day in the fresh Cumbrian air, walking through our doors feels like a warm embrace.

We know that when you are travelling as a group of three couples or a family of seven, space is everything. You can leave your muddy boots in the shelter and park up to three cars right on our driveway, which is a rarity in Windermere. We even have electric car charging facilities ready for your next day of exploring.

Once you are inside, the evening is yours. You might choose to curl up on the large sofas and binge a series on Netflix, or simply relax with a glass of wine while the winter winds bluster outside. We have taken inspiration from our travels across the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas to ensure every detail is perfect, right down to the fluffy towels and luxury cotton bedding that guarantee a restful sleep.

Your Winter Escape Awaits

Winter in the Lakes is about connection. It is about gathering your favourite people, exploring the great outdoors, and sharing memories in a space that feels exclusive yet familiar. Whether you are planning a fine dining experience at the Drunken Duck Inn or a simple family breakfast on the balcony looking at the mountains, we are here to facilitate it.

We would love to host your next getaway. The fells are calling, and the heating is on.
