The festive season doesn't stop the moment the wrapping paper hits the recycling bin. In fact, that lull between Boxing Day and the New Year is one of the most magical times to be in the Lake District. The rush is over, the pressure is off, and you finally have the time to just breathe in the crisp winter air with the people you love most.
If you are looking for the perfect way to bridge the gap between Christmas and 2026, we have found just the ticket. Quite literally.
The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway is running its delightful Winter Warmer Trains from 28th December 2025 to 3rd January 2026, and it is exactly the sort of wholesome, nostalgic day out that makes a winter holiday so special.
Steaming Through a Winter Wonderland
There is something undeniably romantic about a steam train in winter. The plume of white steam against a grey December sky, the rhythmic chugging of the engine, and the warmth of the carriage while the world outside is frosted over.
The Winter Warmer Trains take you on a journey through the stunning Eskdale Valley. This isn't just a train ride; it is a front-row seat to some of the most dramatic landscapes in the UK. At this time of year, the fells are often dusted with snow or sparkling with heavy frost, creating a stark, beautiful contrast to the lush green of summer.
You will be travelling on one of their scheduled heritage steam or diesel trains. These narrow-gauge engines are full of character, winding their way through the valley bottom. It is a slow, steady pace that forces you to slow down too. No notifications, no rushing to the next appointment—just you, your family, and the view.
A Sweet Treat on the Tracks
One of the best things about this specific event is the little extra touch of hospitality. Every full-fare-paying passenger is treated to a mince pie (subject to availability, of course). It is a small gesture, but enjoying the spiced fruit flavours of the season while watching the Cumbrian countryside roll by is a memory in the making.
Even though the big day itself has passed, the railway keeps the magic alive. The stations and trains remain adorned with Christmas decorations, adding that little bit of sparkle to your journey. It is a lovely way to keep the festive spirit bubbling away gently as you head towards New Year’s Eve.
Walking Off the Mince Pies
For those of us who might have indulged a little too heavily in the turkey and chocolates over the last few days, this excursion offers the perfect antidote. There are scenic walks available at both ends of the line.
You can hop off at Dalegarth for Boot and take a wander up to the river, or explore the coastal village of Ravenglass. Getting that all-important fresh air into your lungs is vital at this time of year. It wakes you up, rosy cheeks and all, making the return to your warm accommodation even more satisfying.
Plus, the cafés, gift shops, and the railway museum are open while the trains are running. So if the weather does take a turn, you can easily duck inside for a hot chocolate or a browse through some local history.
The Perfect Base for Winter Adventures
After a day spent riding the rails and exploring the frosty valley, there is nothing quite like coming back to a space that feels like a true sanctuary. This is where staying with us at Thornbeck Manor really comes into its own.
We designed the manor to be the ultimate 'home from home', especially for multi-generational families or groups of friends who want to share these experiences. After navigating the roads back from Ravenglass, you can pull straight into our driveway (plenty of room for three cars), get the heating on, and settle in for the evening.
Imagine returning from your train adventure, cold but happy, and gathering everyone in our lounge. You can debrief on the day's sights, share photos, and relax in a space that offers five-star luxury without the stiffness of a hotel. Whether you are cooking a warming supper in the kitchen or ordering in from one of the many incredible restaurants just a walk away in Bowness, having your own private, luxurious villa makes the downtime just as memorable as the activities.
We love hosting families during this 'Twixmas' period. It is a time for connection, and having the space to be together comfortably is what we are all about.
Start 2026 in Style
The Winter Warmer Trains are a fantastic option for a New Year's outing. Whether you go on the 31st to wave goodbye to 2025, or on the 2nd or 3rd of January to start 2026 with a fresh perspective, it is a relaxing, low-stress activity that works for all ages. Grandparents love the nostalgia of the steam engines, and children are fascinated by the mechanics and the noise.
Tickets are available to book online now, and we highly recommend doing so. While there are limited tickets available on the day at main stations, you don't want to drive over and find they have sold out.
